10th Annual AEC Culture Fest Moves to Chattanooga Market

The Arts & Education Council’s 10th annual Culture Fest will be Sunday, September 27, at the First Tennessee Pavilion. It will be held during the Chattanooga Market from 11 AM to 5 PM. All activities are free and open to the public. Learn more about the annual arts celebration of the Chattanooga area’s rich cultural diversity on this week’s’ Point of View.

Children: Our Future Leaders

In this episode of Point of View, we will be speaking to guests from On Point, New Beginnings, and CBI Counseling Center. They will each share valuable insight on the issues children and adolescents face in today’s society such as anxiety, cyber-bullying, texting, and “sexting”. Many of these issues focus on the tremendous rise in technology seen recently and how it has taken peer pressure to another level.

Our guests will also discuss small steps adults should take to become more aware of what is going on in the lives of children and adolescents. Some of the solutions suggested in this episode are: more adult supervision, additional structure, family values, and most importantly listening to what children have to say.

Chattanooga’s Climate Control Action Plan

In this episode of AEC’s Point of View, there will be guests discussing Chattanooga’s Climate Action Plan. This plan, a 120+ page document which was completed in January 2009, will explain how Chattanooga is working to lower our carbon footprint by reducing greenhouse gases in our area. Guests will be sharing their outlooks and opinions about how Chattanooga is doing its part to achieve sustainability.

Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics

In this weeks episode of Point of View, we will be discussing the NAACP’s Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics, also known as ACT-SO. ACT-SO is a competition of the arts and sciences that was founded in 1977 in order to encourage African American high school students through recognition and scholarships.

We will speak to individuals who have participated in ACT-SO and won at both local and national levels in areas such as vocals, oratory, and playwright. They will share their experiences in the competition and the inspirations that led them to the challenge.

NAACP Celebrates its 100th Year

Vincent Ivan Phipps interviews the first female and youngest president of the Chattanooga chapter of the NAACP, Valerie Armstrong. He also talks with James Mapp, a former president of the NAACP about the progress that has been made in the last 100 years and they’re recent trip to NYC.

August’s episode of First View

The purpose of August’s episode of “First View,” AEC’s television program, is to feature hidden cultural and natural resources that many members of the Chattanooga community may not be aware they have access to. Enjoy interviews with experts on the Tennessee Aquarium’s The River Gorge Explorer, the Chattanooga Nature Center’s elevated cabin for paddlers and campers and a super jazz and funk music festival on August 22.

New Gun Legislation

In this episode of Point of View, Booker T. Scruggs discusses the controversial issues surrounding new legislation allowing guns in both bars and parks. There are conflicting ideas and opinions of individuals who feel the legislation is simply supporting the Second Amendment of the Constitution versus those who believe it is a violation of personal safety.

This episode will also explore why more people are actually applying for handgun permits and whether or not everyone is trained accordingly before being allowed to carry a handgun. Then, proper training techniques will be examined in the discussion.

Money Matters in a Recession

In this episode of AEC’s Point of View, money will be the primary topic of conversation. Dave Hodges, CEO of Integra Wealth, and Denise Mann of Mann Financial Coaching and real estate agent for Crye Leike will discuss both the national and local impact of the recession. Also, they will shed light on how to capitalize and thrive in spite of these difficult economic times.

Governor’s School of Prospective Teachers

In this episode of AEC’s Point of View, Booker T. Scruggs discusses the Governor’s School of Prospective Teachers at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. A brief history and mission of the organization is given along with how students become members through GPA requirements and extracurricular activities.

Mr. Scruggs also interacts with members of the audience who are prospective teachers by asking them about their background and why they have decided to enter the profession.

First View July 2009

AEC’s television show “First View” explores very different avenues of artistic expression in the July 2009 episode. To start, Katrina Craven from the Hunter Museum of Art discusses their summer exhibits. Jellies: Living Art is a joint exhibition between the Hunter Museum and the Tennessee Aquarium with pieces at each location. Also, there is an exhibit entitled Window on the West at the Hunter which explores the real American west through the eyes of various artists.

Next, AEC features the AIM Center, a psychiatric rehabilitation facility in the Chattanooga area. They have many exciting topics to discuss including the celebration of their 20th anniversary and their Fine Arts Program. This program is therapeutic to members through art expression and is followed up by creating an exhibition of their art.

The final topic of the July 2009 “First View” is AEC’s Artamajig, a fundraiser combining both culinary and fine arts. There will be a silent auction of works by local artists to take place at the Tanner Hill Gallery on Thursday, July 16, 2009. For more information on this event, visit Artsedcouncil.org.

In this week’s episode of Point of View, Booker T. Scruggs will be discussing the increasing controversy regarding prescribed legal pain medication and their common abuse and misuse. He will speak with a local pharmacist and an anonymous female who has abused her prescription pain medication.

Welcome to the AEC’s first podcast web log! We hope you subscribe to our podcasts and return each week to hear the audio version of our weekly current affairs television show, Point of View. Since its debut in 1952, Point of View has remained the longest running locally produced show of its kind, and the AEC is proud to call it our oldest program! The television version airs on Chattanooga’s WDEF News 12 on Sunday mornings at 5:30 AM.
